Castles, Wine, and a Long Bus Ride

Day 12
We had our last breakfast in Heidelburg before once again loading the bus. This time we were headed to Castle Eltz in Munstermaifeld, Germany. The castle was at the bottom of an enormous hill, and was surrounded by a breathtakingly beautiful scenery of fields, forests, and creeks. Unfortunately, the castle itself was under some heave renovation of the roof, so half of it was buried under construction rigging. We took a tour of the castle, and were able to see the preserved rooms of armor and original furniture.

After touring the castle, we took a short bus ride to Cochem, Germany to get lunch before touring a family-owned winery called Rademacher. I grabbed some delicious schnitzel at a fair going on in the town. The winery was beautiful, and we were able to see the entire process: The grapes that grew on the steep hillside, the fermentation process, and the equipment used to bottle and label the finished wine. My favorite part of course was the wine tasting afterwards! It was fascinating to try all the different types and really notice the subtle differences in the wine's flavors and aromas. The wine from this part of Germany is much sweeter than the white wine we are used to here.

The day ended much like it began, back on the bus. We drove over an hour to Trier where we would only be staying for that night. The accommodations in the hotel were by far the nicest rooms of the entire trip, and by the time I arrived I was exhausted and eager to get some rest. Before bed, I wandered the streets with a couple friends before finding an Italian pizzeria. The owner had just moved to Trier from Italy a month before, and the pizza was some of the best I have ever had!
