This is our second full free day and I am ecstatic! We said goodbye to the hostel in Brussels (that wasn't in the best part of town) and took the bus to Bruges for a day trip around the city. First, a group of us stopped in a cafe where I bought a vegetable quiche for breakfast and ate it as I walked down the streets. The most memorable thing about Bruges was the chocolate shops. I've never seen so many in my life! It seemed as if every other shop was a chocolate shop. Of course we had to stop in and buy some infamous Belgian chocolate, which I can confidently say lived up to my expectations.
After doing a bit of shopping, we spent some time in a gorgeous cathedral that was home to one of Michelangelo's statues as well as some beautiful art. Next, we found a small shop with a large banner advertising "World's Best Hot Chocolate." Naturally, we needed to see if the claim was true. We ventured into, of course, a chocolate shop and headed up a narrow winding staircase to a teashop on the second floor. The tea room was like a scene from a movie: small dainty chairs, lace, and pink were the central themes and opera music played in the background. The hot chocolate was unlike anything I have ever tasted. First the waiter brought each of us a giant mug, about the size of my face, full of warm milk. Next he brought out a small cup and a whisk; he explained that the cup was made of chocolate and full of chocolate pieces. We simply needed to drop the chocolate cup into the milk and whisk it together. Once again, Belgian chocolate lived up to my expectations! The hot chocolate was absolutely divine! We still had a few hours left to explore, and a few of us decided to take a boat tour. Bruges is sometimes referred to as the Venice of Belgium, so the boat took us through the many canals to see the historic architecture of the city.
At the end of my wonderful free day, I boarded the bus and headed off to Paris! Once in Paris, we went out in search of dinner after unpacking and found an insanely cheap Chinese restaurant. The next five days we spent in Paris was absolutely amazing!
Peace, Love, and finally Paris! ~ Naomi
